While rumor swirls in hushed voices and tale-tellers turn cautious glances to one another in back-alley bars, none can truly claim to know the origins of the League. Shrouded in secrecy, myth, and a thousand-and-one tall tales, this band of gamers roam the mean streets of Baltimore in search of that one perfect game. Hear now, the truth behind one featured member and her quest.
How long have you been gaming (in your favorite unit of time measurement)?
“I’ve been killing it in Spoons and Scrabble for like 14 years, but games in the sense of these kind, probably about five years.”
What color are your meeples when you play?
“Green”
What is your favorite STYLE of game?
“Probably abstract strategy or puzzle-y things”
Break it down: what is your favorite game mechanic?
“Let’s go with tile placement—along the lines of The Duke and Tash Kalar, but also like Karuba”
What is currently your FAVORITE GAME?
“Thunder and Lightning is one of the ones I’m really loving to play the most right now.”
What is your style of play (i.e. social gamer, aggressive, casual—for the fun, etc.)?
“Probably casual with an edge of aggression. I like a game that’s balanced, but I can get pretty aggressive depending on the game.”
What do you look for in a great game?
“I want something easy to learn and play. Also, I want to be able to do it in a reasonable amount of time. I am not the person to sit down and play a game of Twilight Imperium for the whole day. Even after two or three hours, I’ll start to get antsy. I need a game that is going to grab my attention and hold it, especially in this day and age in which I can download books onto my phone.”
What are your favorite things about board gaming?
“A chance to flex my brain muscles when I’m not at work. I like the problem solving aspects of gaming. ”
What other things do you like (or is board gaming just your entire life)?
“I also enjoy reading—science fiction and horror are my favorites. I can also get down with a little fantasy.”
LIGHTNING ROUND!
Best book you’ve read recently?
“Kill Switch by Jonathan Maberry—the whole Joe Ledger series is one of my favorite things in life.”
Best movie you’ve seen recently?
“Captain America: Civil War—I am Team Cap all the way and don’t give me that new Hydra BS because I don’t wanna hear about it.”
Best band you’ve seen recently?
“Portugal the Man. They are always an incredible show.”
Best show you’ve watched recently?
“Scream. Honestly, I watched 2/3 of the first season in one night. For a more serious answer, I’ll go with Fringe because it’s everything Lost should have been and more.”
How many bones are in the human body and how many of them can you name?
“Too many (like 270-something?) and not a lot (probably more than I think I can, but this is a lightning round). Musculoskeletal was the hardest friggin’ part of Anatomy & Physiology.”
If you could play a game with any celebrity, but it had to be a “cubey euro game,” who would you play it with?
“DANGIT. Matthew Gray Gubler because I feel like he would be a fun enough person to hang out with that the game wouldn’t feel so boring and lame.”
Serial Killers, Zombies, or Monsters?
“Serial killers (although, as soon as I finished typing “serial” I thought about changing it to monsters)”
Dream travel location?
“San Diego because it’s one of my favorite places. If I had to pick somewhere new, though, Spain.”
Favorite style of beer?
“Coffee stout.”
